Review of Fury (2014) by Mike G — 19 Mar 2017
I served with WWII veterans. I doubt any other review has. I'd rather believe in the goodness and the honor of our service members, despite the tragedies of war. So, to quote a line from LIBERTY VALENCE:, as it applies to the Greatest Generation? "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.".
Brad Pitt's character deserved to die. The 15 minutes of the film where he's in that long battle and forces Norman's hand around the trigger of a gun was painful to watch. It seemed sensationalist crap that I doubt happened in large scale, and certainly with no large crowds of complacent witnesses.
While there may have been instances where a "Wardaddy" character leads his men so brutally I think the film does a disservice to the heroic and principled fighting of our tanker crews. And, if the War was prosecuted in wholesale fashion to include the killing of prisoners who'd surrendered? I think the event would have been better served as having to eliminate the SS soldier out of the simple inability to take him to a field prison.
