Review of Funny Games (1997) by Dimitris P — 22 May 2008
To those of you who have not seen this movie, let me first correc the Flixster info. It came out in 1997, the cast includes Ulrich Muhe (the man in the poster), and none of the cast they mentioned is actually in this version of the movie.
Anyways, the movie makes me think. A LOT. The plot was frustrating, there were slow paces, but I give Michael Haneke enough credit to say the annoying parts were done on purpose. Thus, I like thinking about why those annoying things happen (such as the rewinding).
I dinged this movie a star because unless you go into thinking about what Haneke "wanted" from the movie, it's hard to get audience-related joy out of it. Still worth a watch if you like to think about not only the movie in front of you, but the other movies you like to watch.
