This is one of the best movies ever made. Almost every detail is perfect: the acting, directing, story, plot, setting, resolution. The characters are vividly real, people who hurt and are lonely. Simple soldiers trying to connect, ordinary women seeking happiness.
It's in the Winesburg, Ohio vein of American art, the common man raised up to the importance of the epic or the biblical.
