Review of From Here to Eternity (1953) by Paul J — 07 Apr 2015
This controversial story is one of the first films to be critical of the war and the military. It may seem tame for today standards by for the early 50's it was shocking. Just the way it portrayed adulterous affairs was considered forbidden.
But competition from TV helped cinema become more adult. Director Fred Zinneman knew that film had to grow up. He also fought to have modern, cutting edge, method actor Montgomery Clift. He was a much more evolved actor, more in touch with his emotions and fearless.
He in turn influenced everyone on set and helped Frank Sinatra give one of his best performances of his career (winning the Oscar). Burt Lancaster also gives us one of his most famous roles. The film was hugely successful, winning the Best Picture Oscar.
With this classic and of course High Noon, Zinnemann proved that he was one of Hollywood's first-rate directors.
