Review of Fritz the Cat (1972) by Kyle G — 22 May 2012
After arguing (in a half-serious way) that everyone in New York is a disgusting, degenerate, idiotic loser, there's not much else to do. And maybe that's why this is only a bit longer than an hour; all the drugged-up sex and racism and mind-numbing violence gets exhausting.
But while it lasts, the humor is pretty charming and fresh. I suppose that's a compliment mostly to Crumb's original story, but Bakshi's adaptation is not without its own quirks. I like the musical interludes, and the way the animation seems to revel in cheap and tacky spots, like it knows how bad it looks but is willing to get high with you.
