Review of Fritz the Cat (1972) by Arun J — 15 Apr 2012
Ralph Bakshi's first film is a lurid adaptation of the popular underground comix by Robert Crumb. Fritz the Cat is a pretentious pseudo-bohemian who craves cheap thrills while attending NYU. His naive escapades and skirt chasing ultimately runs him against the law and into the arms of a Weathermen-like terrorist sect.
Crumb disliked the film so much that he ended up killing Fritz in his comics, but the movie became an infamous cult hit anyways. I wouldn't really consider this movie to be the subversive masterpiece it clearly wants to be, but it borrows enough satire from its source material to be watchable.
