Review of Freeheld (2015) by Ian G — 16 Sep 2015
There are a couple of 'important' films (Freeheld & Stonewall) which are based on true life events, that are about to be released in the next few weeks, which will shed some light on the struggles the LGBT community has endured in its quest for equal rights while at the same time showing the viewer how many amazing advancements have been made in a relatively short period of time.
Marriage Equality may seem like a new concept to many in this country, but the fight had slowly evolved over a long period of time and it seemed for a while that for every step forward there would be two steps back. It took many stories of courageous individuals like the women portrayed this one, across the nation, before the tide was slowly turned and justice prevailed.
Most of us that have lived through the 70's, 80's, 90's and even into 2000's will be able to relate to the struggles of having had to live closeted lives for fear of discrimination, loss of jobs, friends, family even bodily harm if it were known we we gay. This story encompasses some of that along with the struggle a terminally ill woman faces in securing her pension benefits for her domestic partner, the same right her fellow officers would be granted to their spouses with question.
It's certainly not a perfect film, but the message comes through loud & clear and it will definitely tug at your heartstrings along the way.
