There wasn't much screen time spent on making the characters relatable, since so much time was spent on how unjustly they were treated. The events depicted in this movie are important, but the hero of the movie is a straight man.
This is similar to "The Help" wherein the movie makes a young white girl to be the hero, rather than the middle aged, black maids.
