Review of Freedom Writers (2007) by Matthew P — 19 Jan 2010
I liked this movie. I admit, it's not the best film ever made, but it doesn't have to be. At first, it feels like this is your typical movie that is dealing with racism, gang violence, etc. But then you start to care about the kids and what they are going through once you start learning theirs stories.
It's been awhile since a movie made me cry (not bawl or booboo, but shed a tear) and this movie accomplished that b/c I was invested in these characters by the midway point. The fact that this movie is based on real events is the icing on the cake.
A real person managed to accomplish this, and it gives you hope that this can happen in our own communities. A solid movie.
