Review of Foxcatcher (2014) by Alex W — 17 Feb 2015
I don't know what people who say this movie is good are thinking. My Guess the movie has such high credentials that people are afraid to say they don't like because it will make it seem like they don't get it.
The acting is HORRIBLE. everyone is forcing it soo much. Staring intently and talking slowly and seriously doesn't make you a good actor The story is really dry. It's based on a true story so it's hard to fault anyone other than to ask why they bothered.
this moving contains a grand total of 5 minutes of intriguing events and they happen at the end of the film. Can I go back to the acting for a sec. Steve Carell's make up is the only noteworthy achievement of the film and I didn't recognize him.
after about 5 to 10 minutes of him being on screen a told my roomate that I thought that was really sucking it up as an actor and he was like "you mean Steve Carell?" My jaw dropped, Super overacting.
I can't believe he got a nomination I pretty much checked out after that. Channing Tatum puts up the best performance, The other Oscar nod, Ruffalo, also super over acts. The scene where he tells his brother he doesn't want to join the team is the best example.
For all this dry forced acting are we given anything to else to keep us occupied? well, no. there is almost no score to speak of. You just have to sit there with the awkward, bad acting and deal with it.
The song "Fame" by David Bowie came on out of nowhere at one point and that was kind of cool but then 10 minutes later they use the same song again and it just annoyed me that they tried to use pop music at all if they are just going to play the same song over and over.
I'll admit that I didn't really see the last half of the film but my roommate convinced me to go back and watch the last 20 minutes because it was messed up. I didn't really get what happened or why it happened but the other 2 hours of the film are not worth it at all, unless you were planning on doing nothing for two hours any way.
If you want to know about the story of Mark and Dave Schultz look it up on wikipedia. Most undeserved best Director nomination I have ever seen. Call it "artsy" if you must but it is definitely not entertaining and at the end of the day, that is what a movie is for.
