Review of Four Rooms (1995) by Bryn D — 22 Aug 2009
This movie actually consists of four short films centered around a bellhop and his adventures over the course of one night. The second two are brilliant, and all the more deserved and appreciated by an audience that's had to sit through the first two god-awful segments.
Let's pretend they're not homophobic and just focus on how the first segment is so cheesy, pointless, and poorly written that it's insulting to anyone with a brain, and the second segment is less cheesy but still pointless and the characters' actions make no plausible sense.
Which brings us to the Rodriguez segment, which is 20 minutes of giggling all building up to a hilarious finale that is quite an achievement in slapstick comedy. Tarantino's is chock-full of engaging dialogue, moving at a suspenseful pace towards it's sudden and rewarding conclusion.
I should also give credit to Tim Roth for being really funny in all four segments, even the two bad ones.
