Review of Forbidden Planet (1956) by James B — 02 Feb 2013
This is a science fiction classic. The story, characterizations and special effects are all on the mony. Anne Francis is completely engaging. Robbie the Robot is defining and inimitable.
When compared to the films of today, Forbidden Planet is on the slow side with its pacing. Some of the effects say, "look at me! I'm an effect!" Much of the cinematography is stagy, as though the action is seen through a proscenium arch in a live theatrical production.
If when you watch this you keep in mind that it was made in 1956, was ahead of its time and inspired Stanley Kubrick and George Lucas, you will likely enjoy it immensely.
