Review of Forbidden Planet (1956) by Steve B — 25 Aug 2017
I'll admit I probably wouldn't have watched this except that it is mentioned in the Rocky Horror theme song. See androids fighting Brad and Janet Anne Francis stars in Forbidden Planet Well first let me say this: if ever there was a girl in the history of the world who could be described as a living doll, it's Anne Francis in Forbidden Planet.
I kinda expected this movie to be comically bad but it was actually a pretty decent sci-fi considering the timeframe. There was one scene with a creature being revealed that was apparently done cel-by-cel by Disney animators and, unlike a lot of sci-fi creatures of the era, it is quite a beautiful work of art.
The movie itself could reasonably be called an unofficial pilot for Star Trek, there are so many similarities. A young Frank Drebin was the swaggering captain, precursor to Kirk. Kinda fun. Enjoyed it.
Let's not get carried away though. 6.3 out of 10.
