Review of Fitzcarraldo (1982) by Jesse W — 17 Jan 2008
Brian Sweeney Fitzgerald loves opera and will putter, row, and crawl 2000 miles down the Amazon to see it. To bring opera to his tiny town, he sets out on a scheme to exploit the land for rubber - but he has to pull a steamship across a mountain to get there.
It sounds insane, but it makes perfect sense when you see it. And that makes it even more insane. Then you find out it's entirely real. Worth watching twice: once in German, and once with the director's commentary.
Skip the English - its strangeness deserves a foreign language.
