Review of Fitzcarraldo (1982) by Matthew F. J — 30 Mar 2014
One of the first non-documentaries from this director that I have seen, and a long piece of the adventurous type.
We follow a guy that wants to build an opera someplace near the Amazonas. We follow him and his boat with it's crew and most happenings does happen here. It's based on a true story by the way, but I wonder what's left of it.
It never felt that long so the pacing is quite nice I guess.
Pretty filming and great dialogues is key ingredients here. It's not often that films are released originally as dubbed. The actors deliver in English, but it's directly dubbed in German. That makes it more tricky to rate the acting for me, but it looks solid enough.
It's a nice ride and the story is original and cool.
Klaus Kinski seems like an unstable guy, even on the set. The film is know for his intense freakouts whithin the production -.
Complaining about the food on the set and things like that.
We also meet Claudia Cardinale - the lovely girl from "Once Upon a Time in the West", she have aged well I must say.
Probably a very difficult film to make - real Indians, a crazy Kinski and a non friendly climate.
To sum it up - a crazy film that seem like a weird documentary. Still, a very real and trustworthy film. Not a perfect film, but it never was supposed to be one, it's great just the way it is.
7.5 out of 10 ice blocks.
