This depressing film looks at the history of China and its Peking opera while also looking at the relationships and struggles of three characters especially at Cheng Dieyi's secret feelings towards his childhood friend and fellow male actor.
These three people's lives have been determined and affected by things beyond their control. The costumes and the setting make the film look more vibrant.
