Review of Farewell My Concubine (1993) by Ami I — 13 May 2011
A film with lots of pain, sufferring, success, politics and war in how two opera stage brothers took to survive. Chen directs this stunning piece from China. Lots of great performances from Cheung, Zhang and Gong in which the characters seemed really natural and hard to perform.
The film combines with beautiful costumes, art direction, sound, makeup, editing and score. Most of all the superb work from cinematographer Gu with filmed kept the film looking beautiful with it's great camerawork, and deserved an Oscar nomination.
