Review of Farewell My Concubine (1993) by Michael R — 29 Jan 2011
This film perfectly balances the story of two actors across the most turbulent years in modern Chinese history. Kaige Chen tells a compelling love story (really a love triangle) while simultaneously demonstrating the devastating socio-cultural effects of the communist revolution in China and subsequent Cultural Revolution.
The cinematography is stunning and the acting perfect. This film works well on so many levels and along several threads without ever becoming a complicated picture. One of the greatest films of all time.
