Review of Fantastic Four (2015) by Shaunjcw — 10 Aug 2015

Okay so here's like a genuine honest review of the film. It's not as bad as everyone is making out to be for a start! But it does have it's problems.

Overview: The first half of the movie was actually done rather well and to a quality I was happy with. After the time jump to a year later the movie falls apart - Fast!!! It seems like the put a lot of effort into the start and then after they'd had a good build up that maybe lasted longer than expected they realised they had to actually finish the film. The back half just feels incredibly rushed and sloppy. It seems like they just the first thing that came to mind was what they went with because they hadn't planned how to finish it and so it's incredibly sloppy.

In Depth Look:

For the first half of the movie it does a really good job of setting up the characters, Ben and Reed are developed alongside each other and as the characters the movie spends the most time with they actually seem believable and likeable, well written AT THE TIME!

We're quickly introduced to Johnny and Sue and they're just portrayed as the typical know it all pioneering young scientist (Sue) and the typical rebellious teen who is squandering his potential (Johnny) Okay these characters needed a lot more work but fine... Reed and Ben have been done really well so I'll tolerate it. I even though they did a good portrayal of Victor! (NOT! Dr Doom, he was an absolute shambles).

So for this first half it's set up acceptable and I am totally on board with the film, they acquire their powers in a very dramatic way and it's pretty fun to watch, a little over the top but it's a super hero movie, what do you expect?

But I'm aware time is running short at this point. We're like 2/3rds through the run time and they still need to show how the team adapt to their new powers and have Victor come back as Doom... How are they going to fit all that in to what's left of this movie!

Well! First of all! Who needs to see the interesting struggles these guys face developing their new powers when we can just cut to a year later when they've got it all under control! Oh but Reed ditched them because they've been in captivity so we have to have Ben go bring him back. Incredibly sloppy and rushed but still I'm looking at the clock like "They still don't have time to really have Doom do much, this has already been ridiculously fast, I'm worried that this movie is just going to fall apart towards the end...".

And of course it does! But more spectacularly than I could possibly imagine. Doom is back on earth less than two minutes before he's blowing up people's heads with his mind (I was unaware Dr Doom was capable of such things) He's just walking through halls blowing up everyone's brains then decides to create a black hole that will consume the earth, all because he doesn't want them to touch his planet... Okay...? I was trying to give this ludicrous plot swing some defence and was thinking it least it's not "You betrayed me and left me here, I'm going to kill you all" Because that would have been predictable but honestly that would have been ALOT! better. It's typical because it works. Doom was a mess, the ending was a mess and it was such a shame because I really! enjoyed the first half... To just leave it in this pile of mess when they had done so well ugh...
