Review of Fanny and Alexander (1982) by Margarette L — 23 Apr 2008
The crowning masterwork of Ingmar Bergman (the warmest and most autobiographical of his works), this film is rated amongst my favourites of all time! Equal parts fantastical/fairytale-like and stoic/realistic, this film tells the celebrations and tribulations of the Ekdahls - a bourgeois family in turn of the century Sweden - through the eyes of 10 year-old Alexander.
Technically brilliant, Bergman bestows the utmost attention on his characters/actors and the camera. The beauty in this movie stole my heart in so many ways... Of note, there are differences between the theatrical version and the television mini-series version, both striking different tones in the setting, themes, characters and such.
This is a must for any film buff!!!!! A quick side note for any Lena Olin fans: she makes a 30 second appearance towards the end as Rosa the nursemaid.
