Review of Fanny and Alexander (1982) by Vilém S — 26 Mar 2009
Watched the five hour version...BUT was absorbed for the duration of the film. It drifts away from being just a film and become much more of an experience that challenges and provokes the viewer. Despite its length and melancholic subject content, what is truly inspiring is that as a viewer, this does not override any feeling of joy making it an honest depiction of human interaction. Moreover, evidence of fantastic directing.
It is simply an amazing film and a must see for anyone who has an in-depth appreciation for film! Every single aspect of the film has been done to perfection with an undeniable attention to detail. The characterisation, the plot, the scripting, the visuals and the settings which included some breath taking locations.
A brilliant example of visual contrasts to support the plot are used to great effect with the amazing use of colour making the cinematography a delight to witness. An obvious impact made by photographer Sven Nykvist despite famed for his black and white photography. The portrayal of childhood is wonderfully captured with a overt sense of warmth and honesty. The actors also give a wonderfully informed, sincere and sensitive performance, just proof of amazing casting and direction.
The film is said to be the 'swan song' of Bergman and rightly so! I find it near impossible to write what I truly think about this film and the intensity of my admiration and my sense of awe that overcame me while watching it! All I can say is, I need to binge on more Bergman material!
