Review of Encounters at the End of the World (2007) by Benjamin S — 20 Nov 2008
Mind-altering. The film is at times legitimately scary and sobering, at other times very, very funny (the Aztec descendant's go-to icebreaker). Plus, it's constantly unpredictable in Herzog's ruminations and the stories it chooses to follow. The cinematography and ideas really make me want to check out The Wild Blue Yonder.
This is the kind of movie that makes me realize how bad of a film critique person I am, and makes me thankful I didn't follow that path. You can't study this movie, you just have to kind of feel it out and follow it through.
