Werner Herzog travels to Antarctica to document not just the people who make it their home 5 months out of the year, but to capture its glory above and below the ice on film for all of us to see. Herzog obtains some fantastic footage of the aquatic environment under the iceberg, along with some rare aboveground moments (a delirious penguin running by itself for the mountains, seals mugging for the camera while they lie on the ice, one of only 3 volcanoes on earth where the earth's magma is exposed to see).

The film also features the diverse and colorful people who live at McMurdo Station, ranging from a woman who drove across the entire continent of Africa and can fit into a duffel bag (yes) to a man who claims descendence from ancient Native Americans.

Finally, the film is peppered with Herzog's witty and sometimes condescending dialogue, at one point asking a penguin expert if gay penguins exist, and at another breaking in with a voiceover on top of the duffel bag woman's story to say, "Her story went on forever.

" Overall a very edu-taining film with some great footage of a place that most people on this planet will never see.
