Herzog's documentary celebrates the eccentricities of the humans stationed at the South Pole, mirroring the odd and beautiful creatures and sights nature has created. His sometimes coy, sometimes willfully perverse, always intelligent film showcases Herzog's own insatiable curiosity, and his attempts to make a religious experience not just of the earth but of the experiences that color the lives of the people studying that earth have several fascinating results.
