Review of Encounters at the End of the World (2007) by Tibor B — 31 May 2010
Herzog's documentaries quite often set out to film one thing, but end up more interested in another. Here, although keen not to do a stereotypical nature film, it was the otherworldly footage of undersea ice diving that attracted him to Antarctica.
However, what Herzog found and quickly became a strong part of his film was the unique collection of people who inhabit Antarcticas scientific outposts - a hardy collection of adventurers, philosophers and devoted scientists all with fascinating stories to tell.
No surprise that Herzog feels at home with them. As usual Herzog uses very distinct music to create an abstract feel to his images, and his wry, accented commentary gives his films a lot of character.
And the only footage of penguins is of disorientated individuals running inland to certain death.
