Review of Elvira: Mistress of the Dark (1988) by Robert I — 02 Nov 2014
In the era of "GamerGate" this film is an undiscovered gem that addresses modern issues of feminism while also being one of the strongest female led films I've ever seen. Women who own their appearances, tastes, and fashion are not asking to be manhandled in this Rape Culture driven society Americans find themselves living in.
1988 made an extremely positive message film about these contemporary issues. Using gaming as a metaphor, Elvira could be considered a modern female games journalist - while the small town she finds herself in is dominated by the old game industry regime, fanboys, and internet trolls who would rather see her dead than be herself.
Elvira is the original Suicide Girl and despite her appearance and jokes is absolutely not the sexual floozy the villains of the film say she is. Verdict: Culturally Relevant.
