Review of Electroma (2006) by Ace-Ahio W — 14 Mar 2008
Essentially this is a journey/roadtrip film about two robots longing to be human.
It is quiet and beautiful and would have thought that there'd be daft punk tunes pumping through the entire film but the boys have proved me wrong and made me feel quilt guilty for even thinking that they might be that egotisically driven in the first place.
Whilst I've heard it compared to Kubrick or described as 'kubrickian', I think that only really applies to the lab scene, and then it only really applies to one of kubricks films, 2001: a space odyssey, as opposed to having a general Kubrick feel. If I were to choose a different director though it'd be Gus Van Saint. This would be Gus Van Saint's sci-fi. This themes of alienation, soul-searching, mortality, and the slow, long, single shot scenes of figures crossing landscapes establishes an internal rythym in the viewer so that even when a shock or surprise comes your physical body doesnt react with increased heart rate or breathing, you watch it in a lulled, calm, observent condition.
Very beautiful and very well written and directed. A film to get comfy for and enjoy to enjoy the 'trip'.
