Review of El Topo (1970) by Tibor B — 28 Nov 2009
Self-consciously "weird" western, one of the first midnight movies which embraced the surreal and alternative sensibilities. Jodorowsky's violent western embraces a huge swathe of mythic and spiritual ideas, along with a fair amount of blood and tits.
It strikes meaningful moments dealing with death and rebirth at times, but the overarching vibe is one of rather pretention and weirdness for weirdness sake, a film that I would imagine seemed far better stoned out of your skull in the 70s.
