I've searched the internet for a sensible explanation to the meaning of this film and, although I think that there must have been some religious message hidden away there somewhere, I can't find one.

Maybe it was created to be on in the background at late night after-parties for those a bit partial to Mary J. It'll do the job, that's for sure. It's a weird movie with some scenes that would probably create more controversy today than they did in 1970.

Just don't try to understand the storyline.
