Review of Easter Parade (1948) by Maico * — 16 Apr 2008
Gene Kelly was supposed to play the lead opposite Judy Garland, but broke his ankle playing ball with his kids the day before shooting was to begin. Thrilled at the prospect of working with Garland, Astaire stepped in at the last minute.
Although Judy was hilarious and Ann Miller the quintessential strutting peacock, I couldn't stop putting Gene's handsome playboy face atop Astaire's genial grandfatherly ways and it really ruined the movie for me.
Astaire is supposed to be Judy's love but I felt he was just too damn old for the role.
