Review of Easter Parade (1948) by Calvin C — 30 Mar 2013
At the time of writing, this is my favourite MGM musical. Watch in HD or Blu Ray to see the true workmanship of this film. Costumes are stunning and the attention to minute detail is evident. The music is Irving Berlin and Astaire and Garland are in top form.
These musicals could easily just be considered camp but Easter Parade is one that I go back to go as proof that Hollywood in its heyday was a serious art form. Vincente Minnelli, Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly were considered the finest of the directors but looking at this and Charles Walters keeps things moving with flair.
The plot is secondary and merely a springboard for the songs and dancing.
