Review of Dreams (1990) by Eve T — 29 Jul 2007
What I found particularly interesting about this was the juxtaposition of especially the first and last films, in their themes and particularly their music. The first film (and to a certain extent subsequent films) deals with humankind in opposition to nature, portraying the secrets of nature to be forbidden to the knowledge of humankind.
And the forbidden fox wedding is punctuated by solemn, almost funereal music. In sharp contrast, the final film deals with humankind in harmonious existence with nature, and the music, accompanying a funeral no less, is a lively, upbeat and catchy tune, celebrating life with exuberance.
Some of the other films are somewhat cheesy in the current context, but the combination of beautiful scenery and highly stylized production, always referring to Japanese culture make this a recommended pick.
