Review of Dracula (1958) by Ricardo O — 19 Oct 2011
This may be the best version of the classic Dracula story. It's certainly the most entertaining one unlike Tod Browning's version with Bela Lugosi from 1931, it maintains it's wonderfully dark atmosphere throughout.
Even though he only has about 13 lines in the movie, plus many hisses, Christopher Lee gives Bela Lugosi a run for his money as the definitive Dracula. The shocking close-up shots of him are most impressive.
It may not follow the novel word for word but is intelligently scripted and perhaps the closest to the novel. I am starting to see why Terence Fisher is so highly regarded as one of the 10 greatest horror filmmakers.
He's really great. Peter Cushing certainly plays the greatest Van Helsing of all. He is really awesome. It was also a pleasant surprise to see Michael Gough (Bruce Wayne's butler Alfred in Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher's Batman movies) in the movie.
Such a terrific horror film. The Hammer horror films really changed the perception on the genre. They made it bloodier and arguably much smarter. A must see for horror fans. 10/10.
