Review of Down in the Valley (2005) by J M — 06 Aug 2007
Hit and miss. At first it seems like a slightly predictable and juvenile romantic drama, but it does have an edge. I like the weird place the film ends up, especially the eerie desertion of the half-completed suburban housing estate and the whole abstract cowboy theme.
Norton does his best and manages shy and charming as well as paranoid, unhinged nutter convincingly, but if you're looking for a film with a point or a satisfying conclusion you'll be disappointed.
It just meanders and is appealingly surreal in places.
