Review of Dope (2015) by Prentice S — 19 Sep 2015
"Dope" is one of those movies that I really walked out on impressed. Not because it was a perfect movie or that it reflected something about myself that I could relate to, but because my expectations were exceeded immensely.
The story of Malcolm, Diggy, and Jib was hysterical, combative, and above all else, realistically silly. Sure, it's unlikely that a kid like Malcolm, even in a crummy L.A. neighborhood, would score cocaine, sell it, and after, use this experience to get into an Ivy League school.
But it was constructed so well that it felt real. Performances from the three leads (Moore, Clemens, and Revolori) were stellar and the direction from Rick Famuyiwa brought a unique style that really evoked the 90's culture that the main characters obsessed over.
