Review of Dope (2015) by Joe I — 10 Dec 2015
In all honesty, this was not the movie I was expecting. I was expecting a more music story along the lines of 8 Mile, except with a more retro in the present feel. Instead I got a movie that is more along the lines of Dear White People.
What this movie does is keep a central story on a single character while bringing in various characters to create talking points on various subjects that revolve on the character. While Dear White People in my opinion did this better, Dope is still worth a real watch.
The main story is fun with enjoyable characters to follow. The young cast perfectly encompass the feelings of being different to the point of no classification. This is a good movie to bring up the talking points it does.
As for the music, while the main characters are musicians, the story is not about them trying to make it as musicians. The movies soundtrack is a great mix of new school styles while mainly consisting of the old school 90's hip hop that the characters are fans of.
Pharell Williams songs for the fictional band makes you really wish that they were touring.
