Review of Donnie Brasco (1997) by Anthony I — 28 Jun 2015
Fuggetaboudit, Donnie Brasco is a mob masterpiece. Sure, it borrows heavily from GoodFellas, as many movies after it did, but how else can a mob story be told without seeming so similar? These stories revolve around the same kinds of people, with the same kinds of moral quagmires to deal with.
Violence, betrayal and corruption always seems to take over. That's all these true stories are really about. What makes this such a winning film is how well Al Pacino and Johnny Depp play their roles.
I believed them through every step of the way. I also believed, how fragile and captivating the mob life is to an unsuspecting pure soul. In GoodFellas, is was just a neighborhood guy. Here, it's an FBI agent, who is supposed to get turn these guys in.
I was fixated the whole time, and I loved watching this film. It's a classic mob movie.
