Review of Donkey Punch (2008) by Tibor B — 02 Jan 2009
Intense and nasty Brit thriller - three girls from Leeds hook up with four London boys on a clubbing holiday in Mallorca, and go back to the luxury yacht the boys are crewing for boozy, drug fuelled "fun".
What begins as a fantasy come true (well, for the FHM generation anyway) ends in disaster as one of the more over-enthusiastic, insecure guys executes an urban myth-type sexual manouvre during a group sex session, resulting in the death of one of the girls.
From there it inevitably spirals further and further into disaster and death, as each persons self-preservation instincts results in worse and worse consequences. Director Olly Blackburn does a fine job at ratcheting up the tension, with some fairly smart explorations of group dynamics, particularly among the guys.
It still delivers sufficient genre violence and gore and the actors manage to keep the characters actions relatively credible and "realistic" despite the escalating hysteria.
