Review of Annie Hall (1977) by Tibor B — 04 Sep 2012
Still a cornerstone of the un-sentimental romcom genre. The film manages to combine both the self-conscious, with Woody Allen's self-deprecating comments to camera and pop culture references with a genuine relationship drama, which perceptively and eloquently demonstrates how a relationship both develops, and in this case, fails because of neuroses and character foibles, rather than any big romantic gestures or dramatic break-up moments.
Allen found a good match in Keaton, and it still contains some classic comedy lines and moments but the emphasis on talking and neuroses just made me want a bit more gut emotion rather than endless wry analysis.
Still definitely a case of much imitated, but rarely bettered.
