Review of Denial (2016) by Vincent Q — 05 Oct 2016
It felt like a film without focus. Obviously its centered around the holocaust. But the biggest lesson learned from the main character was to trust her legal team! Seriously. Nothing felt new or revelationary about this. Its all info that everybody all knows. So what was the point of this film? What was the new perspective? Who knows? Maybe there just needs to be an obligatory film about the holocaust every year and this was it. It felt like it was written in the style of a documentary but acted like a proper fiction film.
Timothy Spall and Tom Wilkinson were very good. Rachel Weisz sounded like a chicago gangster from the 30s! But the main focus at the start of the film was on her legal representative Anthony, who then became overshadowed and a secondary character to Tom Wilkinson. The focus kept changing. The court scenes between Wilkinson and Spall was great acting. Best part of it. But too much awkwardness and a disjointed pace that killed any potential rhythm.
