Review of Death Race 2000 (1975) by Esin Kutay K — 14 Feb 2010
A cult sci-fi classic if ever there was one.
The biggest sport in the US is a car race from one side of the country to the other where the drivers get points for killing pedestrians they come across. And that's about it.
Despite purporting to be set in some sort of post apocalyptical world in the distant future (ie the year 2000) everything is pretty much like the 1970s aside from the souped up cars the perticipents drive, which come complete with guns and other implements with which they can kill anyone they come across.
David Carradine (off of King Fu) and Sylvester Stallone (off of Rocky) are the two main competitors in what is actually a very tame race. The plot is pretty thin - revolving around a bunch or rebels using the race to hep overthrow the dictator that now rules the US (who in turn blames it on their greatest enemy - the French!).
And that's about it. There's lots of driving around, not very much violence and a good deal of wooden dialogue. But it still manages to be reasonable fun.
