Review of Death in Venice (1971) by James G — 25 Aug 2007
...or "Fresh fruit for rotting vegetables". Dirk Bogarde's mannered performance is not for all tastes (but then, neither are Visconti films) but are completely in keeping with his character's prissy, fastidious character and twitchy mannerisms.
This is not an arty film about an old man letching over a young boy, but about how intangible and transient youth and beauty is and how all things age and decay. That's my interpretation, anyway. Excellent, unforgettable use of Mahler's fifth symphony which is now forever associated with this film.
