Review of Death in Venice (1971) by Mathieu A — 21 Jun 2008
There's an episode of "Cheers" wherein the gang debates and ranks the, shall we say, most perspiration intensive films in the history of the cinema. For obvious reasons related to class and taste, "Death in Venice" escapes their attention.
But don't be fooled; Dirk Bogarde gives one of the sweatiest performances ever committed to celluloid. Beyond that, though, there's very little of interest here in this bloated, sentimental, and tedious ode to an unctuous man.
