Dirk Bogarde plays Gustav like one would expect a Hamlet would be played, but with out the gripping dialogue one expects in the part. One can truly see an emotional and confused human-being, but Visconti tries and fails to make this movie tell like a novel would with little being said and direction not as detailed as one should expect.

However, the elaborate costume, art decoration, and interesting use of the camera; with zooming and panning, makes the film quite beautiful.
