Review of Death in Venice (1971) by Zack B — 08 Sep 2013
Here is another vast, brightly colored and expertly shot period piece from Visconti wihch, despite the love evident in each frame, suffers from a lack of immediacy that drags the film flimsily into tedium.
Dirk Bogarde's honorable performance is beautifully restrained with just the right touch of xenophobic peculiarities, but it fails to bear the weight of Visconti's grander, more picturesque disposition.
