Review of Dead Poets Society (1989) by Brad S — 31 Jul 2011
I'm giving Dead Poets Society three stars reluctantly because it feels like it should be more. After all DPS arguably launched Robin Williams career as a serious actor and I believe launched the career of Ethan Hawk.
It's tone and style can still be detected in prep school movies that are being made today. It's rich in themes (carpe diem) and characters. Plus I remember loving this movie when I watched it in the theater - I think it may have 'choked' me up at the time.
But watching it this time round I really thought the suicide was overly dramatic. I couldn't help thinking - 'really ... you're going to kill yourself cause your dad won't let you be an actor.
That's kind of dumb couldn't you just wait a year until you got into college," And since the whole movie pivots on this point the suicide scene needs to be entirely believeable - but this time round it just wasn't .
.. I still love DPS but its lustre has faded a bit.
