Review of Dead Poets Society (1989) by Helena V — 24 Apr 2011
Dead poets society is an American drama from 1989. It was directed by Peter Weir and the main characters are played by Robin Williams, Ethan Hawke and Robert Sean Leonard. It has also won the Oscar in tha writing (original screenplay)category.
The film shows the life at the Welton Academy, a very strict and traditional school, when a new literature teacher, John Keating, is contracted. He is totally different from the other teachers and he motivates his students to "seize the day" and follow their dreams.
The main purpose of the film is to criticize the lack of responsibillity of some students and the inflexibility of the parents and the school. the film moves around "Carpe Diem" and the psychological health of the characters as they try to reach their dreams.
It is a very strong film and you have to have maturity to completely understand it. I particulary enjoyed it and would recommend it to the ones who don't like romance and enjoy psychological matters.
