Review of Dead Poets Society (1989) by Jungmo L — 13 Jun 2018
Enjoy the present. Make your life unique. This statement represents everything in the movie. What is true education? John Keating of Dead Poets asks like this. I who am a Korean high school student living a mechanical life was envy that John Keating let know students what they really wanted and gave students a free mind.
Though the background is different, education focused on college entrance exam is very similar to the current reality of education in Korea, which made me sympathetic. Charismatic and comfortable image of Robin Williams, who played the role of John Keating in the movie, gave us a better sense of immersion in the character of John Keating.
However, there were some disappointing scenes for me reading the novel first. Neil Perry's father and the principal were portrayed as much more daunting and scary in the novel, but slightly less expected in the movie.
Also, when Todd Anderson signed in the principal's office, he had a big fight with his parents in the novel, but it was not portrayed in the movie. There were some parts of the novel that made the connection awkward.
But I still remember the farewell scene where Todd Anderson stood up on his desk and said, " Oh Captin, my captain. " In conclusion, it is an excellent drama that fully explains why the film won the Academy Award, including a great theme ceremony, splendid cast and charming story.
