Review of Dabangg (2010) by Digvijay S — 09 Sep 2010
Dabangg is a Hindi masala movie which is made for the masses. It has all the things which are needed to make a good Bollywood masala movie- a daredevil corrupt cop, some good action sequences, a very spicy item number, some fine romance and a war-in-the-family angle.
Dabangg is set in a small town of Uttar Pradesh. Its the story of a corrupt cop portrayed by Salman Khan. He has a small family consisting of his mother, step-brother and stepfather. This cop is brave and corrupt and puts the loopholes in the system to his advantages. He meets his love interest, portrayed by Sonakshi Sinha, while tracking a criminal. This town also has a young and a want-to-be politician played by Sonu Sood. He is the bad guy as he deals with all the illegal activities in the town. The story is pretty old but it works. Its fast, thrilling and bogs down for a minute or two and than picks up.
Salman Khan is the backbone of this film. He carries the film all over till the end and doesnt disappoint. He acts very effortlessly and it seems that this role was tailor-made for him. He looks good in everything in the movie whether its the action sequences or the romantic moves. If you are a Salman Khan fan, then this movie is a must watch. His dialogue delivery, comic timing and his action moves will really sweep you of your feet.
There are loads of other good actors in the movie such as Anupam Kher,Vinod Khanna, Om Puri, Mahie Gill and Dimple Kapadia. All of them did justice to the small roles which were given to them. Sonakshi Sinha looks good and her acting skills are not tested in this film but she did justice to her role. The chemistry between her and Salman Khan seems great and it is never felt that Salman is twice of her age. Sonu Sood looks good in the role of the politician and delivers a normal performance.
The music of the film is good and the surprise package for me was the equally good background score. The songs are fitted in the story almost perfectly and the item number 'Munni Badnaam' is gonna rock the charts for a long time. The screenplay and cinematography of the film is finer than several other Hindi masala films lately.
Abhinav Kashyap directs his debut film pretty well. Its pretty hard to direct such masala stuff but he does great. This is a story which has been presented several times on-screen but he just shows it in a different manner to the audiences. The movie also has some good action sequences esp. the fight in the end. It consists of all the stuff like people flying here and there, superhero power of Salman Khan but in the climax the way Salman Khan gets his shirt off is pretty unique.
Dabangg consists of some great masala stuff and some peppy dialogues in UP style. Its exciting, its thrilling and above all it is very entertaining. Its a must watch for everyone. Go for it and I'm pretty sure that you wont be disappointed.
