Review of Curly Sue (1991) by Dominik G — 01 Jun 2012
John Hughes' final directorial effort before his self imposed exile. This was such a big deal back in '91 despite it being the least of Hughes' incredible body of work. Built around the effortless charm of child actor Alison Porter, Jim Belushi when his career was at its highest (y'know, before running his goodwill into the ground with 8 seasons of According To Jim) and Kelly Lynch poised to be the biggest female star up until when that Julia Roberts swooped in.
This movie is a nostalgic trip of the time more so than being a great movie. Enjoyable, sweet and John Hughes knows how to film an impressive montage, it however lacks the soul of his revered writing and ends up being overtly contrived.
Still gives me that warm, fuzzy feeling.
